What is the American Voices Project?

For years, the United States has built its policy in the blind, without understanding how people are working, living, and getting by. The American Voices Project relies on immersive interviews to deliver an unusually comprehensive portrait of American life across all 50 states. The objective: To build 21st-century policy that's truly of the people, by the people, for the people.

Research fellows will help build a national, on-the-ground research effort to transform the country. With each interview, fellows will begin to piece together what’s going well, what’s not going well, and thus help build the case for evidence-informed policy change at the local, state, and federal level.

200 communities.
5,000 voices.

Some communities are growing, gentrifying, or welcoming new streams of immigrants, while others are emptying out and losing population. Some communities are social mobility engines that reliably provide opportunities to many, while others provide opportunities mainly to those born into wealth and privilege. The American Voices Project allows us to learn more about how people are faring in all types of communities across the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Native nations.
